Psiforce
Our experience of sound is fundamentally integrated with a wide range of states, from immediate vigilance, to timeless serenity, to any of the abundant states in the vast realm of consciousness. The relationships we form with both sounds we encounter living in the world, and those that we create forming worlds of their own, each alter our perceptions of ourselves, our world and our place in it. This becomes a symbiotic feedback loop where we are both created by sound and in turn create sound that then forms us and our world anew.
I recreate myself through sound. Through imagining new ways of relating to the world of sound in real time, I improvise journeys through conscious experience and invite awareness of the present moment. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire a collective celebration of the present while also inspiring others to look to an expanded sense of self and recreate themselves in turn.
Vectophone
The Vectophone is a gesturally controlled wind synthesizer built with Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, 3D printed housings and programmed in Pure Data and Python. It combines expressive powers of both breath and motion control into a cohesive musical instrument, capable of complex control over electronic synthesis.
After seeing a 2011 TED performance by Onyx Ashanti showcasing his “beatjazz controller” – as it was called then, I was inspired to support his crowdfunding campaign and get in touch. Onyx introduced me to the world of graphical, real time DSP programming with Pure Data, as well as the world of making with electronics, programming & 3D printing, leading me to begin developing my own instrument. Through a series of iterations, this instrument eventually became the Vectophone.
Dreams
“Dreams” is a series of audio-visual works featuring a hypnotic, shifting visual stream of AI generated “dreams”, accompanied by algorithmic musical compositions programmed in Pure Data.
“Dreams I” is available on Youtube. “Dreams II” is forthcoming.
